Once she finishes this she adds 3 inches of white canvas around the entire image for a water color rendition. The idea behind this whole thing is to optimize the image before painting. I guess one could follow fays sandwich technique or use your own techniques. So, she does this sandwich technique to brighten only the face and neck region. Once she gets her desired effect on the dress, she flattens the image and then repeats the sandwich process for the face. (ie where she wants the middle layer to show through). She uses a white mask and then paints black on it over areas where she wants to see darker shadows on the dress. Then, she goes to the top layer and turns it on and adds a layer mask.
She uses image adjust levels command and uses levels to bring out the details nicely in the dress…ie she darkens it a bit because it was overexposed. She demonstrates this with a bride and uses the middle image to fix the dress which had blown out highlights. Lesson 2, "The Sandwich" is a technique that will allow you to color-correct your image, especially in situations where you have multiple areas of highlights and shadows.ĭuplicate the background image twice so that you have 3 identical layers. Before adding any borders though, the first thing you need to do is color correct your image. An oil painting however should be painted edge to edge and thus you don’t need to add any canvas. So, she adds 2-3 inches of white canvas around the image. She explains that a water color image should have a white border around it. A higher key image works better for water color. What is the deciding factor for her? Well, its whether the image looks high key or low key to her. She analyzes the photographic image and decides which way to go.ie paint a watercolor type image or paint an oil painting.
